LLM07:2025 System Prompt Leakage - Code Examples

Each pair below shows a vulnerable design that over-trusts the system prompt, and the secure redesign that assumes the prompt is public. The theme is constant: move secrets and enforcement out of the prompt and into surrounding code. Python (using the OpenAI and Anthropic SDKs) is primary; Node/TypeScript is shown where it adds something.

The single test to apply to every example: if an attacker held this exact prompt, what would they gain? In the secure versions, the answer is "nothing they couldn't already see."

Example 1: Secrets in the Prompt

Example 5: Output Safety Net (Node / TypeScript)

Even with a clean prompt, add an independent check that flags responses which echo instructions or match secret patterns. This is a safety net and detection signal — not the reason the design is safe.
